Any device you have in your house that heats up anything at all (such as kettles or water heaters) uses a lot of energy – heating something up quickly is very hard to do and takes up a lot of energy. Water heaters fit right into these categories, taking a lot of energy to use. Therefore, it is important to find a water heat that is efficient as you use your water heater a lot; it is estimated somewhere between 15 and 20 percent of your household energy bills goes on your energy heater!
If you are really conscious about saving energy and have a comfortable budget, you might want to look at other sources of energy for your water heater rather relying on your energy provider. Two common types of these are geothermal heating and solar heating. Solar water heaters rely on solar panels on the roof or in the surrounding area somewhere to turn solar energy into electricity which is then used to directly heat the water. Geothermal water heaters use heat from the ground, collected via large pipe systems to heat the water.
The major disadvantage of this however is that most of the heat is needed in winter when the ground is cold! Both solar panels and geothermal heating are expensive options for water heaters, but you wont need to shell out money to pay for energy bills as it will all be free – you need to take this into account when purchasing the system. In some countries the national grid will even buy back any excess energy you produce from these systems, allowing you to generate extra revenue – this is something well worth looking into.
